Li Tie Addresses China-UK Urbanization Forum

(UrbanCNet)——The UK-China Urbanization Event Northern Powerhouse Business Event was co-hosted by China Center for Urban Development (CCUD), British Embassy in China, UK Trade and Investment, and China-Britain Business Council on September 24th in the afternoon. The forum was opened on the occasion of the 7th UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue in Beijing, hosted by George Osborne, British Chancellor, and Ma Kai, Vice Premier of China State's Council. After the opening remarks given by Li Tie, Director General of CCUD, and George Osborne, the meeting was moderated by Director General Li and Sir Michael Bear, UK Special Envoy for Sustainable Urbanization to China and former Lord Mayor of London.

In his opening remarks, Li pointed out that China’s urbanization promises a huge untapped market with China’s urban population being 9 times that of Britain and it serves as an important area for furthering China and UK’s economic and trade cooperation.

After the opening remarks, Director General Li joined Lord Jim O’Neill, British Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, and other participants to see around the pitch book showcasing the investment in Britain’s Northern Powerhouse. During the showcasing, Director General Li also talked with with British civic and business leaders including Sir Richard Reese, Leader of Manchester City Council, Peter Marland, Leader of Milton Keynes Council, and Professor Tim Stonor, Managing Director at Space Syntax

The presentation was followed by the plenary session “Northern Powerhouse and China’s City Clusters”, co-hosted by Director General Li and Sir Michael Bear.

Then followed two parallel sessions: the mayors’ forum, and Low Carbon and Smart City Development. After Director General Li’s introduction, the workshop witnessed heated discussion among Chinese and British delegates on smart cities and sustainable urban development. During the mayors’ forum, experiences and best practices on urban cooperation were shared among Qiu Aijun, Deputy Director General of CCUD, 9 British mayors including that of Liverpool, and a dozen Chinese mayors from West China, including that of Neijiang. They also discussed urban challenges and solutions and explored potential cooperation in policy-making, research and commerce.

Before the sessions, Director General Li also met with Chancellor Osborne, Barbara Janet Woodward, UK Ambassador to China, and Sir Michael Bear to exchange views on furthering China and UK’s cooperation on urbanization.
